The Sphinx
In Greek mythology, the Sphinx asks what creature moves on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening. The answer is a human being across the course of a life: infancy, adulthood, old age (as one walks with a cane). The sphinx’s riddle is fundamentally about transformation through time.
As the days shift toward darkness and mystical creatures appear on All Hallows’ Eve, these small porcelain wall pieces add a touch of magic.
The imagery draws from mythology and fairytales, inhabiting the boundary between reality and fantasy as we step into autumn.
Each piece is slip-cast, finished with one of my original glazes, and produced in a limited edition of one or two. I apply the illustrations using a ceramic transfer process: each image is printed onto a thin film, transferred to the glazed porcelain, and permanently fired so that it melts into the glaze.
